Heavy rain, early morning, a New England mill town well past its milling years. The route follows a bike path laid down where railroad tracks used to run — the straight, level kind of line that only a railroad leaves behind. The rain does not let up. It is spring, and this is the loud kind of spring rain, the kind you go out in only if going out in it was the point. The microphones are binaural, so the downpour comes at the path from every side, the way it did that morning. Towns like this one grew up along their rail lines, and the walk traces one of those lines after the trains have gone: the town off to either side, the rain overhead, the old right-of-way carrying foot traffic now instead of freight. It sits fine under sleep or homework, and better with the volume given some room.
